Column March 2025 [Botamochi: A Seasonal Japanese Sweet]

Have you ever tried botamochi? This traditional Japanese sweet, enjoyed during Higan (a Buddhist period of remembrance around the spring and autumn equinoxes), is made with soft, chewy glutinous rice coated in sweet red bean paste. In spring, it's called botamochi, named after the peony (botan) flower, while in autumn, it's known as ohagi, inspired by the bush clover (hagi).
