2025-03-10 Graduation Season

Japanese Culture

It is Graduation season!!
If you see some women wearing Hakamas, they might be graduating from college. From elementary to high school, graduating students usually wear school uniforms for graduation ceremonies, but for college students, women tend to wear Hakamas or dresses, and men wear suits.

If you have any Japanese friends or neighbors who go to school, you might check the grade. It would be nice to give a little graduation gift to those who are graduating from school.

The typical gift might be flowers. It is nice to choose flowers according to the flower languages.

In Japan, there are only about three weeks of vacation before you enter another school or start working. Therefore, in March, downtown would be filled with graduated students having their last fun before entering a new world.

Department stores, entertainment facilities, and so on are popular spots. Some amusement parks sell discount tickets for students for this season, which is a kind of ‘Gakuwari (student discount).’

A graduation trip is another choice. It is called “Sotsugyo-ryoko” in Japanese. Okinawa, Hokkaido, and Kyoto would be the top choices. For abroad, Guam, Hawaii, and Korea are popular countries. Ticket prices tend to be higher at this time of year.
