Beach Culture in Japan

Summer is in full swing. How about swimming on the beach??

Going out on the beach is one of the popular activities in Japan. There will be Beach Houses where you can have snacks and drinks. Beach parasols and float tubes are available for rent. You might have a comfortable and fun time along the beach without carrying much stuff.

Although beaches in Japan have an opening period, which is called 'Umi-biraki' in Japanese. People set the day from when you can enjoy the beachside. The date is usually around July until late August. After the 'Umi-biraki', you can still enjoy walking along the beachside or marine sports, but bathing will not be allowed. One main reason is that the lifesavers will not be around, so no one might notice even if some accidents happen which lead to a serious case.

You can check the 'Umi-biraki' date on the website. If you couldn't reach out, beach houses will be a guide. Beach houses are temporary, so if you can see them, it means that the beach is open.

One of the unique activities Japanese people enjoy around the beach is called 'Suika-wari (Watermelon smashing).' One tries to smash a watermelon blinded with a stick, and others give directions only by voice.

Check out the Umi-biraki and have a safe & fun beach life!!
