Japanese Food

Onigiri is a traditional Japanese rice dish made by shaping cooked rice by hand.
They are typically formed into triangular, round, or cylindrical shapes. Most commonly, onigiri contain a filling, are sprinkled with salt, and wrapped in dried seaweed. They are simple to make, easy to eat by hand, and convenient to carry, making them a familiar and accessible food. Onigiri are eaten for lunch and at various events.

Traditional fillings include pickled plum, grilled salmon, kelp simmered in a soy sauce-based broth, and bonito flakes with soy sauce. Recently, however, onigiri have come in a wide variety of options, such as those with seasonal fillings or made from seasoned rice.

While onigiri were traditionally homemade, they can now be found in supermarkets, convenience stores, and the growing number of onigiri specialty shops across Japan.

It seems that onigiri with a tuna and mayonnaise filling is the most popular among international visitors, but while you're in Japan, be sure to try a variety of other flavors too!
