Shop Creating Miniature Landscapes on a Tray: BONKEI

Enjoy natural scenery reproduced on a tray.

We display and sell bonkei, an art form representing natural scenery with a history of 1,400 years in Japan. Bonkei is a traditional Japanese technique, like flower arrangement and bonsai, where people try to replicate the beauty of nature.
Bonkei is also a three-dimensional art. Natural sceneries are recreated by laying out objects such as stones, sand and plants on a tray.
We create bonkei by replicating real gardens or by taking inspiration from what we see while traveling or reading books.
We pay attention to mosses in particular. We look after them with great care.

Condensed Natural Scenery

With natural stones, mosses and plants, you can enjoy a rich sense of the season. In bonkei, we sometimes arrange miniature objects such as supension bridges, boats, and figures that are usually used in dioramas.

The Woods of Totoro

The idea of this design comes from "My Neighbor Totoro", the animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki. We want to introduce bonkei to as many people as possible, so we selected a theme that is familiar to foreigners and Japanese alike.

Gallery

You can see a wide variety of bonkei. Please come and have a look. We are always happy to see you.
